Abstract. Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle caused mainly by viruses, other infectious agents, including bacteria, protozoa and fungi, and can also be caused by various toxic substances, medications and systemic immune-mediated diseases. Chronic diffuse myocarditis (CDM), or inflammatory cardiomyopathy, is defined as myocarditis in combination with cardiac dysfunction and ventricular remodeling.

The actual prevalence of myocarditis is difficult to determine, but according to the Global Registry of Diseases, it is 22 cases per 100,000 population per year. According to the French Registry, myocarditis ranks second (about 3% of cases) among all hospitalizations of patients with chest pain. Acute myocarditis (GM) is more common in young patients (aged 30 to 45 years), there is evidence that men get sick more often (60-80%).

The development of chronic CDM is noted in 10% of cases of diagnosed or missed GM as a result of myocardial damage caused by it and the development of systolic dysfunction.
